Poison Ivy Video

I had no idea poison ivy grew in huge thick, hairy vines up trees! This stuff is everywhere. I also learned poison ivy is an oil that can live on your shoes for a year (and still cause a rash if you or anyone touches it). Has anyone every had poison ivy?

I have a new goal: to not get poison ivy.

Wow! we have never seen poision ivy grow like that. About how thick is it on the tree? And if it can stay on your shoe for over a year, how can you treat it?

It depends on the tree. Some trees had a vine of poison ivy growing on it that was about an inch thick and about three feet long.
Other trees had a vine of poison ivy growing on it that was 6 or 7 inches thick and 20 feet in length.
Some trees were covered in so many poison ivy vines, you could hardly see the trees.
The scientists here say a product called "Tecnu" kills poison ivy on hands etc. They wash their clothes and shoes and absolutely stay away from those vines. None of the scientists here have ever gotten poison ivy.

That poison ivy is alot different than the kind we have here. Does it cause a different reaction if you come in contact with it? Do you treat it the same as the kind here in Texas?

Actually we have that type of poison ivy in Texas as well. People just do not recognize it because they think they are looking at a vine, not poison ivy. It doesn't matter if you touch the leaves or the vines; the reactin is the same and the treatment is the same.

I did not know this but you can get poison ivy any time of the year. Two of the teachers grabbed a poison ivy vine this morning to keep from falling into the water. The scientists told them to wash with "Tecnu" when we returned to the research station.

What is "tecnu" and where do you buy it? Also, I heard that some people can touch poison ivy and never get a reaction. Is this true?

The scientists told us some people never gets poison ivy even though they touch it and other people can get it just by being near it or by touching someone who has poison ivy on their clothing or hands! TECNU can be bought at any pharmacy.
